ALBAWABA - Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader, was killed in an attack during a visit to the Iranian capital of Tehran on Wednesday morning.

Iranian local media reported that the attack took place at around 2 a.m. while the Hamas leader was residing in a special headquarters for war veterans in the north of Tehran.

Palestinian groups have called for a strike and protests across the West Bank in condemnation of the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader.

Russia and Iran as well as many other countries have released separate statements regarding the killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.

Nasser Kanaani, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said: "Haniyeh's martyrdom in Tehran will strengthen the deep and unbreakable bond between Tehran, Palestine, and the resistance," Al Jazeera reported.

Nonetheless, the Russian foreign minister's deputy Mikhail Bogdanov noted that the death of the Hamas leader is "an absolutely unacceptable political murder". He added that the attack "will lead to further escalation of tensions."

Furthermore, Yemen rebels have decried the assassination of the Hamas leader and labeled it as a "terrorist crime".

Turkey's Foreign Ministry said that Haniyeh's assassination "aims to expand conflict" beyond Gaza to a regional scale.

Lebanese Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati also condemned the assassination of Haniyeh saying that this action is considered a dangerous one and could expand the circle of global concern and tension in the region.
