ALBAWABA - Zohran Mamdani made history as the first-ever Muslim Mayor of New York City, local media reported.

The Guardian said that Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani was elected on Tuesday as the 111th mayor of New York. Mamdani competed against former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

The 34-year-old socialist secured victory with over 50 percent of the vote. Cuomo, 67, gained over 40 percent, on the other hand, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa gained only just over 7 percent of the votes.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama hailed the victory of several Democratic candidates during Tuesday's mayoral elections, but said that there’s "plenty of work to do" for the party.

"Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win," Obama wrote on X.
