ALBAWABA- The United States exercised its veto power in the UN Security Council to block a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The resolution, supported by all other Security Council members, urged the release of detainees, the exchange of Palestinian prisoners, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
This marks the fifth instance of the US vetoing a ceasefire-related decision regarding Gaza in a year, reinforcing its staunch support for Israel amidst escalating violence.
Critics argue this move grants Israel a cover for its atrocities, which have resulted in catastrophic human losses and displacement in Gaza.
Over 44,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed, more than 120,000 injured, and thousands remain missing. Additionally, approximately 1.7 million people have been displaced within the besieged strip.
The US decision has drawn widespread condemnation, with accusations of enabling ongoing Israeli atrocities and undermining international institutions.
The veto, coupled with continuous American military, financial, and political backing for Israel, raises questions about Washington’s commitment to human rights and its respect for the principles of the international community.
