ALBAWABA- In a significant development, the United States has wielded its veto power to block an Algerian Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Algeria's representative urgently pressed for a ceasefire, emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. However, the resolution faced defeat with 13 votes in favor and the American veto.

Expressing disappointment, Algeria's UN envoy stressed the Security Council's obligation to uphold peace by endorsing a ceasefire. 

Russia's permanent representative condemned the US for repeatedly obstructing ceasefire resolutions, accusing Washington of prolonging Israeli military operations without accountability.

China's delegate echoed concerns, denouncing the ongoing violence in Palestine as collective punishment. The US decision has elicited strong global criticism, highlighting the urgent need for immediate action to alleviate the suffering in Gaza.
