Four rockets launched form Syria by the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad landed in the Israeli district of Galilee and the occupied Golan Heights, the Israeli army reported Thursday.

In a statement posted on its Hebrew Twitter account, the IDF said the rockets were launched from Syria by Islamic Jihad with Iran's "funding and guidance."

The statement said Syria would be held responsible for the attack and should "bear the consequences."

Ynet news, the English language website of Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, said in its latest report that two rockets landed in Galilee and two others in the Israeli-side of the occupied Golan Heights.

The rockets prompted alert sirens in several locations in north Israel, the report said.

Israeli media had issued conflicting reports about the number and origin of the rockets. Initial reports had said only two rockets were fired and launched from Lebanon.

The rockets fell in open fields and caused no casualties or material damage. But one of them, which hit near the Galilee town of Kiryat Shmona, caused the field to catch on fire, Ynet said.

The alert comes on the same day that Israel announced it had deployed its Iron Dome system in the south in response to warnings, Ynet reported.
