A group of gunmen ambushed Wednesday a Lebanese Army unit near the border with Syria, wounding five soldiers, a security source told The Daily Star.
The military unit was passing through the Rahwa region on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal when gunmen began shooting at the soldiers, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Soldiers responded to the source of fire and intermittent clashes are still ongoing as the Army pursues the perpetrators.
In a statement, the Army confirmed the ambush, which occurred at 1:25 p.m., saying the fighting was still raging as of the afternoon.
The National News Agency said Syrian gunmen carried out the ambush.
In March, three soldiers were killed and four others were wounded in a suicide car bomb attack on a military post on the outskirts of Arsal. The attack was later claimed by an Al-Qaeda-linked group fighting in Syria.
The Lebanese Army deployed heavily along the border with Syria earlier this month in an attempt to curb the number of suicide bombings and the infiltration of gunmen following a series of deadly attacks in the country.
