A women's demonstration held at Haft-e Tir square in central Tehran Monday did not have the necessary permit, it was announced on Tuesday. Ali Jahanbakhsh, director-general for political and police affairs of the Tehran Governor-General's Office, told IRNA that no individual or group had applied for a permit for the women's rally held in central Tehran yesterday, adding that the rally was therefore presumed to be without a permit and illegal.
Nearly 100 women, self-styled defenders of women's rights, gathered at Haft-e Tir square Monday afternoon.
Jahanbakhsh reminded that all political groups, activists and parties who plan to hold rallies or sit-in demonstrations should make prior arrangements such as obtaining the necessary permit from the Tehran Governor-General's Office before staging their protest to forestall any public disorder.
The demonstration lasted for two hours and ended with police intervention.
