Airstrikes carried out Sunday by Russian warplanes near Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria have left at least 63 people, including nine children, Reuters reported.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the raids on the town of Khasham were among a series of raids that also struck two other towns over the last two days, killing scores of people.

Russian warplans have been pounding the region surrounding Deir Ezzor as Syrian government forces clash with Daesh militants, who control much of the province. The remaining government-held areas of the city have been besieged by Daesh since last March.

Airstrikes were also carried out in Raqqa, Daesh's de facto capital in Syria, killing at least 44 people over the past two days. The Observatory raised its initial death toll from Saturday after many wounded later succumbed to their injuries.
