The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has decided to apply video assistant referee (VAR) starting from the 2018 AFC Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in the history of the continental competition after FIFA adopted the technology at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The decision of applying the VAR in the remainder of the current version of the AFC Champions League comes after the signs of success shown by the VAR, despite some controversy over the not using it in some decisions affecting a number of World Cup matches.
