Why was Yochai Avni killed?

Amid police's initial reports that there is a suspected "criminal incident" in the case of Yochai Avni, many pro-Palestinian activists suggested that the Israeli prison officer was killed over his treatment of Palestinian prisoners in jail.

Palestinian prisoners are facing harsh circumstances inside Israeli jails as they are subjected to the toughest torture methods. Many Palestinians tell horrific stories about torturing methods, Israeli police use at prisons.

Amnesty International reported in November 2023 about the horrible treatment, Palestinians face inside Israeli jails.

According to the report which was based on testimony from released detainees and human rights lawyers, as well as video footage and images illustrating some of the forms of torture and other ill-treatment prisoners, Palestinians are subjected to severe beatings and humiliation of detainees, including by forcing them to keep their heads down, to kneel on the floor during inmate count, and to sing Israeli songs.
