ALBAWABA- Unidentified drones struck a U.S.-linked floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at Egypt’s Damietta Port on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, triggering fires at the facility and raising concerns over a possible expansion of regional attacks targeting energy infrastructure.
According to maritime security reports, including those from Ambrey, at least one drone struck the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel believed to be the Energos Winter, a floating LNG facility chartered by U.S.-based New Fortress Energy and operating at Damietta’s natural gas terminal.
The attack caused fires involving the vessel and nearby gas-related infrastructure. Emergency crews responded quickly and brought the blaze under control. No casualties were reported, and port operations were not significantly affected. The damaged vessel was reportedly moved offshore, with officials expecting activities to resume.
The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum said fires broke out aboard two fertilizer and storage vessels at Damietta Port and confirmed that the situation had been contained. However, maritime security sources maintained that the targeted floating storage facility is owned and operated by a U.S. company.
Damietta’s LNG terminal is a strategic component of Egypt’s energy sector, serving as a major import and regasification hub amid rising domestic energy demands and declining natural gas production. The Energos Winter has added significant regasification capacity to support Egypt’s energy supply.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Some Egyptian security sources reportedly disputed reports of a drone strike, attributing the fire to a technical malfunction in an engine room aboard an older vessel. However, international maritime security assessments and video footage circulating online have supported the drone attack account.
The incident comes amid escalating regional tensions involving the United States, Israel, Iran, and Iran-aligned armed groups across the Middle East. In recent weeks, energy facilities, military bases, shipping routes, and strategic infrastructure have increasingly become targets in the wider confrontation.
The strike follows a series of attacks and retaliatory operations involving U.S. forces and Iran-backed groups in Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, and the Gulf region. Recent clashes have included missile and drone attacks on U.S. positions, strikes on Iranian-linked targets, and disruptions affecting maritime security in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways.
