ALBAWABA - In reaction to a broad corruption probe that included 91 individuals, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, an unapproved protest broke out in the Saraçhane area of Istanbul on Sunday night. As some protesters fought with police and broke inside the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) headquarters, the demonstration swiftly got out of control.
The purpose of the protest was to express disapproval of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office probe. Despite being calm at first, police officers intervened at the Bozdoğan Aqueduct as a group of protesters tried to march toward Taksim Square.
Police asked the throng to leave after issuing warnings. But some provocateurs started hitting cops with water bottles, stones, and pyrotechnics.
As police intervened to control the scene, some people escaped into neighboring alleys, while others were able to enter the İBB building in the confusion.
Tensions around the high-profile corruption investigation are still high, so authorities are still working to identify individuals responsible for the disruptions.
