ALBAWABA - A huge number of restaurants, schools, shops, workplaces and more closed down in Amman, Jordan on Dec. 11, 2023, amid the general strike for the people of Gaza who have been suffering from the ongoing Israeli aggression on it and Palestine.

Several photos and videos were shared on social media by users including 7iber showcasing the empty streets of Amman which are usually filled with people and traffic including the old Downtown area.

This strike doesn't come as a surprise since several Jordanians and Palestinians in Jordan have taken the strong stance of boycotting anything and any place that supports the state of Israel whether it's restaurants, grocery stores, or more.

The strike included people on social media urging others not to buy anything whether it be cash or card, not to use their bank accounts, not to leave their houses, to deactivate Facebook/ Instagram, and to spread awareness through the hashtag "Strike_for_Gaza."

Jordan's strike is part of a worldwide phenomenon in hopes of stopping the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza since October 7 which has taken the lives of more than 17,000 Palestinaians who are children, elderly, and women.

Many restaurants and shops in Jordan posted their official response to the matter including boycotted places such as McDonald's and Carrefour which are in desperate need of customers.

Several schools also shut down for the day in respect of the general strike with some allowing kids to leave early. It's worth noting that hospitals are operating normally for sick Jordanians and emergencies. Moreover, delivery platforms such as Talabat are operating normally but most restaurants and grocery stores are closed for the day.
