US Secretary of State John Kerry met with King Abdullah II on Friday in Aqaba to discuss Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, AFP reported.
"We are arriving in Aqaba, Jordan, with Foreign Minister Judeh today to see King Abdullah to talk about the peace process," US spokeswoman Marie Harf said.
The surprise visit comes a little more than a month before peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are scheduled to expire. Palestinian President Mahmoud and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have publicly expressed reservations about extending peace talks past the April 29th deadline.
Abbas has demanded a settlement freeze from the Israelis if talks are to continue past the deadline, while Netanyahu has made recognition of Israel as a Jewish state a precondition to any agreement.
Kerry has been shuttling to the region in an attemp to secure a framework agreement between Israelis and Palestinians, which would extend talks past the April deadline.
