A ship chartered by the UN's World Food Program has docked in western Yemen carrying fuel for aid deliveries, AFP reported Sunday.

The UN aid agency in a statement said the ship arrived in the western port of Hodeida in efforts to open up "a new humanitarian lifeline for civilians impacted by the conflict," as the country runs low on fuel.

The MV Amsterdam brought 300,000 liters of fuel and supplies for humanitarian organizations after their activities stopped due to a shortage of fuel. Another 120,000 liters will be delivered later on Sunday, according to AFP.

"This breakthrough for the UN humanitarian operation in Yemen will allow us to reach hundreds of thousands of people in need of urgent food assistance," said Purnima Kashyap, WFP country director in Yemen.

The delivered fuel was distributed to 50 aid organizations to resume relief aid deliveries, including food distribution. The WTF estimates 12 million Yemenis are struggling to eat

The agency said one million liters per month of fuel will be needed to continue humanitarian operations.
