ALBAWABA—The Islamic government of Afghanistan has appointed its first accredited ambassador to the UAE, making the UAE the second country after China to recognize the Afghan envoy.

The UAE officially received the ambassadorial credentials of Maulana Badruddin, who will serve as the envoy of the "Islamic Republic of Afghanistan" to Abu Dhabi.

The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development in a statement, noting that Saif Abdullah Al Shamsi, Assistant Undersecretary for Protocol Affairs, received the credentials.

Shamsi extended his best wishes to Ambassador Badruddin and his Peruvian counterpart, Alberto Alejandro Farje Orna, expressing hopes for strengthened relations between the UAE and their respective countries.

The appointment highlights the UAE's economic connections with Afghanistan's rulers and signals a significant step in diplomatic relations.

Despite the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, no UN member states have recognized the interim Afghan administration.

China was the first country to appoint a new ambassador to Afghanistan in September 2023.
