Eleven people were killed and 35 injured when a gas container and a dryer exploded at a Taiwanese bamboo and rattan factory in the southern part of Vietnam, local press reports said Sunday.

Three workers were fighting for their lives and eight others were in a serious condition in Cho Ray hospital, Thanh Nien newspaper said on Sunday. It further said the company did not have insurance for the workers.

Ho Chi Minh City Police, for their part, declined further comment.

The explosion in the Go Dau district of Tay Ninh province, northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, occurred on Saturday morning. The incident totally destroyed the drying factory of the Long Tre Co, a Taiwanese-invested joint venture specializing in the production of bamboo and rattan articles for export.

According to Nhan Dan, 47 workers were located around the 12 meter long and 2.9 meter high bamboo dryer when it suddenly exploded. (Albawaba.com)
