ALBAWABA - Top opposition figures were jailed in Tanzania as planned protests were blocked and halted by the police in the capital, Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania's opposition Chadema party said that its chairman Freeman Mbowe and his deputy Tundu Lissu were arrested by the police.

Furthermore, the party noted that the police were also placed in key positions across the capital to ban gatherings and mass protests.

On Sunday Tanzania police posted on X account warning people not to protest. It said: "The Commander of the Special Zone of Dar es Salaam, SCAP Muliro Jumanne Muliro, in an interview with ITV, said there will be no protest tomorrow and those who dare to protest will see it."

Before being arrested, Mbowe said to Chadema party supporters: "Demonstration is our constitutional right and we are surprised by the magnitude of force being used by the police to threaten people and suppress our freedom."

It is worth mentioning that President Samia Suluhu Hassan took over power in Tanzania in 2021 following the death of former president John Magufuli.

Now, Freeman Mbowe accused Samia Suluhu Hassan and her government of taking the country back to old and oppressive years.
