One of the two political groupings calling itself the Syrian Communist Party (SCP) has reelected Wissal Bakdash as its secretary general, according to a statement issued Sunday.
The SCP split in two in 1986, with the other party headed by Yusuf Faisal.
Both are represented in the National Progressive Front, the seven-party governing coalition in Syria that is led by the ruling Baath party.
The statement announcing Bakdash's reelection on Saturday said the 150 delegates affirmed their intention for the party to continue cooperation with the Baath party and "all progressive national forces and continue to defend workers, farmers and all laborers."
In a message to Syrian President Bahsar Al-Assad, the party said it supported his "honorable policy of not renouncing one inch of our territory or one drop of our water," in reference to the Golan Heights.
