ALBAWABA - The images of demolition operations in southern Lebanon cheered by Israeli troops and their families during a military homecoming function drew worldwide criticism after the video of the occasion was shared on social media.
The event was held to celebrate the return of members of an Israeli military unit. A large-screen presentation showed explosions and damage to residential sections of Lebanese villages. As film circulating online shows, the audience cheered, applauded and laughed as scenes of crumbling buildings and rising smoke were screened.
The video was flagged by monitoring group Israel Genocide Tracker, which monitors online content related to Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon. The organization said the clip showed a recent party attended by servicemen and their families after their return from deployment.
"Those images shown at the event resembled footage of demolitions previously released by the Israeli military from operations in southern Lebanon, including areas near Bint Jbeil," observers said. The demolitions are part of wider Israeli military operations that Israel says are tied to security goals in the border area.
The video has gone viral on social media platforms and has provoked heated reactions from journalists, activists and analysts. Many were disgusted at what they saw as a public celebration of wartime damage, while others said the film was evidence of a disturbing normalizing of violence.
Some analysts related the pictures to Israel’s ongoing efforts to create a buffer zone within southern Lebanon, where previous military operations have been said to cause widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure.
The row has intensified an already passionate debate about the battle, with supporters and critics holding strongly differing views of both the military operations and the popular response to it. As the footage keeps spreading, it has become yet another battleground in the bigger conversation about the human cost of the conflict and the narratives around it.
