U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday told Syria's government and opposition representatives to stop fighting and engage in the negotiations that will end the country's war.
"Our purpose was to send a message to the two Syrian delegations and to the Syrian people that the world wants an urgent end to the conflict," the U.N. Secretary-General said in a closing press conference at the talks held in the Swiss town of Montreux, Agence France Presse reported.
"Enough is enough, the time has to come to negotiate," Ban said, according to AFP. "Syrians must come together to save their country, protect their children and find a peaceful path."
"We must seize this fragile chance," the U.N. leader said, after Syria's government and rebel representatives gathered with global powers for what has been the most serious international push yet to find a resolution to Syria's now three-year-old civil war.
Syria's UN-Arab League Lakhdar Brahimi told the press conference in Montreux that he was scheduled to meet with the Syrian regime and the opposition on Thursday to discuss the next step in negotiations, AFP reported.
"Tomorrow I am going to meet them separately and see how best we can move forward," Brahimi added. "Do we go straight into one room and start discussing or do we talk a little bit more separately?... I don't know yet."
The delegations representing the Syrian regime and opposition are due to start talks in Geneva on Friday, according to AFP.
