ALBAWABA- Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu, stating, "Whoever brings criminals like Itamar Ben Gvir into his government should not be surprised by losing control over them."
This follows recent unrest at the Sde Teiman camp, where soldiers are being investigated for major crimes against Palestinian detainees. Demonstrators clashed with police outside the Beit Lid camp, where the detained soldiers were held, and among those arrested was a reserve officer with the rank of major, who served as a commander in the camp.
In response, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office called for immediate calm and condemned the storming of the Sde Teiman camp, emphasizing the need for order and adherence to the law.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also condemned the illegal storming of a military base, stressing that the law applies to everyone, even in moments of anger.
The Israeli Chief of Staff warned that the storming of the base endangers state security and violates the law, calling the incident very serious.
The unrest was fueled by hundreds of Israeli right-wing extremists, supported by Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir, protesting investigations into soldiers found guilty of committing crimes against Palestinian detainees, which resulted in around 50 deaths.
Haaretz reports that investigations into 48 Palestinian deaths were conducted, with 36 occurring at the Sde Teman camp.
Minister Ben Gvir expressed satisfaction with the harsh treatment of Palestinian detainees, repeatedly describing them as sub-human criminals. The incident highlights the blatant violations the Palestinian detainees are subjected to in the Israeli prisons and the contentious nature of the Israeli policies and actions towards Palestinians.
On his part, the President of the Palestinian Prisoner Club told Al Jazeera that the Israeli occupation has been executing prisoners for months. He highlighted that prisoners at Sde Teiman prison show clear signs of torture, describing Sde Teiman as a facility where systematic torture is prevalent.
He also pointed out that no international body has conducted a serious investigation into the torture operations in Israeli prisons, calling for urgent international attention to these human rights violations.
