Syrian President Bashar al-Assad discussed the visit he is "shortly" to make to Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak in a phone call Saturday, his official spokesman said.

The conversation focussed on "bilateral relations between the two countries, the regional situation and the visit President Assad will shortly make to Cairo," said Gibran Kourieh.

No date has been given for Assad's trip.

Mubarak said last month that it would be in the second half of September, while the Arab press has reported that it will be part of a foreign tour which will also take in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Assad has not traveled abroad since taking office in June.

Syria and Egypt hold regular consultations on regional issues, in particular the Middle East peace process.

Talks between Syria and Israel have been frozen since January after stumbling on the issue of Syria's demand for the return of the whole of the strategic Golan Heights which Israel seized from it in the June 1967 war - DAMASCUS (AFP)
