Japanese police arrested a 68-year-old man for allegedly stalking a 60-year-old woman he never summoned the courage to talk to but claimed to have loved for nearly two decades, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
The suspect, unemployed bachelor Kazuo Maeda, who was detained at Mejiro Police Station in Tokyo, allegedly "waited for the woman near her home when she commuted in the morning and evening, staring at her without saying anything," the spokesman said.
He is also suspected of peeking into her home, although he never harmed the woman, who is also unmarried, said the spokesman.
She consulted police in March, saying the man had been stalking her for years. The woman's name was withheld.
Maeda persisted in following the object of his affections about 70 times despite the police telling him to stop it in late March, the spokesman said.
"The suspect told us he has loved the woman for 18 years," he said, adding Maeda used to live near the woman's home -- TOKYO (AFP)
