The United States asked Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer to postpone his next month visit to Damascus. According to Sabah newspaper, Washington conveyed Ankara its expectation from President Sezer to cancel or postpone his visit to Damascus scheduled in April through diplomatic means.
It should be mentioned that US Ambassador in Ankara Eric Edelman said Tuesday that the international community should be in full consensus on the need to implement UN Resolution 1559.
Meanwhile, the paper added that the European Union (EU) was also angry about Turkey's ''neutrality policy'' regrading Syria. A high-level EU representative told the newspaper that Ankara's remaining silent until Syria withdrew soldiers from Lebanon led to some questions, and said, ''Turkey should have pressed on Damascus''.
According to Hurriyet, despite the pressure, Sezer is not planning to cancel the visit but "will personally call on Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to withdraw Syria’s troops from Lebanon."
