A tsunami alert has been issued in northern Japan following a powerful earthquake that shook the country on Tuesday afternoon. Dozens of people were reportedly injured.

The earthquake's epicenter was apparently off the Pacific coast, resulting in relatively light damage considering its magnitude, though several skyscrapers in Tokyo reportedly swayed as a result of the tremor.

Nearly 17,000 homes were left without electricity, while landslides were reported in several locations. Tokyo's major airport was shut down for a period as well, according to VOA.

In addition, several of Japan's nuclear facilities were temporarily closed as a safety precaution.
