Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana on Sunday re-appointed Jacques Sylla as Prime Minister of the Indian Ocean island, a day after Sylla's pro forma resignation, national radio announced.

Sylla's resignation and the dissolution of the government was a formality in light of their party's sweeping victory in legislative polls held on December 15.

Results of that poll, confirmed late last week by the High Constitutional Court, gave Ravalomanana's I Love Madagascar Party 80 percent of the seats in the national assembly, according to AFP.

Sylla, in consultation with Ravalomanana, is shortly expected to announce the composition of the new government.

Sylla was first appointed Prime Minister back in March 2002, when Madagascar was in the throes of a political crisis sparked by a dispute between Ravalomanana and former head of state Didier Ratsiraka over who won the presidential election held in December 2001. (Albawaba.com)
