Lebanon: Karami to set up new government by week's end

Lebanese Prime Minister designate Omar Karami said on Tuesday that a new government will be formed by the end of this week.

In press statements, Karami said the new government was supposed to be announced tomorrow but due to the mourning period on the death of Pope John Paul II, it would be declared at the end of the week.

"The formation of the new government will have to wait until Saturday. We cannot form the government while the country is in a state of mourning for the death of the pope," Karami added.

He said the amendment of the electoral law will top the agenda of the upcoming government.

In the meantime, outgoing Interior Minister Suleiman Franjieh said that he will not take part in the new government.
