In his capacity as Ruler of the Abu Dhabi emirate, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a law setting up a sanitary sewage service company.
Under law No. 17 for 2005, the new general joint stock company shall be called "Abu Dhabi Sanitary Sewage Services Company" and headquartered in Abu Dhabi city. The Company's capital is fixed by the law at Dh 10 million apportioned over a similar number of shares with a face value of one dirham per share, all of which are nominal and fully payable in cash by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, according to WAM.
The subject company shall exercise the functions as defined in its articles of association, most particularly the possession of all sanitary sewage utilities and installations and services including pipe networks and sewage pumping stations in the emirate as well as collection, treatment, recycling, maintenance and upgrading of sanitary utilities, installations and sewerages.
According to the legislation, the company shall only carry out its activities upon acquisition of a license from the Organisation and Control Office (OCO) of Water and electricity Sector in the Abu Dhabi emirate.
The company shall assume the organisation and development all matters of the emirate's sewage-related policy, including the privatisation of the sanitary sewage .
The company may, upon the prior approval of the OCO, collect fees in return of the services it renders, among which are linking installations to sewage systems in the emirate and selling treated water products to the Department of Municipalities and Agriculture.
The law provides that the ownership of all sewage treatment units, networks, pumping stations, apparatus and laboratories in the emirate, shall be conveyed to the newly established company.
Furthermore, all the employees of the DMA's Sewage Section shall be transferred to ADWEA while retaining the same job rights and privileges.
