Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood has expelled a senior leader for accepting a position in the government, a Brotherhood spokesman told AFP on Tuesday.
The group's top decision-making Majlis al-Shura "recently approved a recommendation by an internal court to expel Abdel Rahim Akour," one of the Brotherhood's senior leaders, said spokesman Jamil Abu Bakr.
"Mr. Akour violated Brotherhood decisions that are opposed to any participation to the government," he said.
Akour's membership in the Brotherhood and its political branch, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), was frozen in June after he became minister of rural affairs in the government of Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb.
Akour, who is a member of the IAF's consultative council, is also minister of environmental affairs.
The IAF and the Muslim Brotherhood have not been in the government since 1990 and boycotted the 1997 legislative elections.
Both groups are staunchly opposed to any links with Israel, with which Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994 - AMMAN (AFP)
