King Abdullah II of Jordan called on Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak to "make every effort to put an end to the tension in the Palestinian territories," when he received a phone call from him Monday evening, the official Petra news agency said.
The king urged "Israel to make every effort to eliminate the reasons for the tension in the Palestinian territories," the agency reported.
He stressed the need to launch "a speedy and comprehensive inquiry to determine the reasons sparking the wave of violence and bloody clashes," it said.
Abdullah, who had spoken earlier Monday with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, said he was "confident that the Palestinians are making all the efforts they can to contain the situation and preserve the peace process.” -- AMMAN (AFP)
