Jordan has officially requested a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council that Saudi Arabia declined to take in October, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Monday.
The UN General Assembly, which voted on Oct. 17 to give Saudi Arabia the seat traditionally reserves for an Arab nation on the Security Council, must formally approve Jordan as a replacement.
Riyadh declined to take the seat in the wake of difference between the Saudi Arabia and the United States.
In an interview with Jordan’s Petra news agency, Judeh said he made both verbal and written requests to UN chief Ban Ki-moon.
Judeh said he has informed Ban that Jordan’s decision comes after Riyadh apologized for not taking the seat on the top world body, adding that Amman “respects” the Saudi choice.
