ALBAWABA—Jordan foreign minister Ayman Safadi is expected to depart for Syria's Damascus today to hold talks with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and some Syrian officials.
The commander-in-chief of the new Syrian administration, known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani, met on Sunday, with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Fidan landed in Damascus on an unannounced visit, which is considered the first by a Turkish foreign minister in more than a decade. Upon his arrival, he met with al-Sharaa at the People's Palace, along with the Turkish Chargé d'Affaires.
The Turkish foreign minister's visit was after a previous trip by Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin to Damascus on December 12, four days following the collapse of the former Syrian regime and its ex-president Bashar Assad.
In addition, yesterday, al-Sharaa also held discussions with a Lebanese delegation headed by Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt in the Syrian capital, as part of the accelerating diplomatic activity witnessed by the Syrian capital two weeks after the fall of the regime.
