ALBAWABA - Outgoing Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has sparked controversy with remarks suggesting that Egypt’s growing military capabilities could pose an unexpected threat to Israel in the future.

During a speech to officer graduates in Holon, Halevi acknowledged that Egypt does not currently pose a direct security threat to Israel, but warned that this could change at any moment. He highlighted Egypt’s modernizing military, which includes advanced fighter jets, submarines, missiles, and armored divisions, raising concerns in Israeli security circles.

This is not the first time Israel has questioned Egypt’s expanding defense capabilities. In January, Israel’s UN representative Danny Danon expressed concerns over the significant armament of the Egyptian army, questioning the necessity of such a buildup in the absence of direct threats.

Responding to these concerns, Egyptian UN Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek defended Egypt’s military strategy, emphasizing that a strong army is essential to safeguard national security. He reiterated that Egypt’s military doctrine is defensive, aimed at deterrence and protecting regional stability.

While reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to peace, Abdel Khalek stressed that Egypt will not compromise on its military strength and remains committed to protecting its sovereignty and security interests.
