Israeli Army Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz was meeting late Saturday with the heads of Palestinian security services to find ways to restore calm in the Palestinian territories, an Israeli military spokesman said, quoted by AFP.
Earlier, an Israeli military spokesman admitted Saturday there was no ceasefire agreement with the Palestinians, contrary to previous Israeli statements, and predicted more "very violent" clashes in the territories, the agency reported.
Head of Gaza preventive security, Mohammad Dahlan, had dismissed in an interview with Al Jazira TV that there was a cease fire agreement, though he admitted he talked to Mofaz on phone.
The satellite channel has reported that the Palestinian leadership was in a meeting to evaluate the situation.
The Palestinian TV said that there will be no schools for the next three days, fearing the breaking out of more clashes. The decision to suspend schools was taken by Minister of Education, Naim Abu Hommos, according to the TV.
The violent confrontations, which were sparked off Thursday by a visit by Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon to the Aqsa Mosque compound, the third holiest site for Muslims. The clashes claimed the lives of 23 Palestinians, and the injury of more than 500 – (Several Sources)
