Gunmen have killed 12 people at a row of alcohol shops in Baghdad, the BBC reported.

The attackers restrained policemen at a checkpoint in the Zayouna district, in Eastern Baghdad.

The attacks took place during rush hour, when the shops were at their busiest.

Reports quoted police as saying that the same shops were attacked last year.

Islamist militants in Iraq have stepped up attacks in recent months.
