Iran has arrested several members of the outlawed opposition People's Mujahedeen who were planning to assassinate government officials earlier this month, press reports said Sunday.

The Khorassan paper quoted Intelligence Minister Ali Yunesi as saying that the Mujahdeen fighters had been planning to carry out the killings during "Government Week" last month.

There was no indication of who the targets might have been or how many members of the Mujahdeen had been arrested.

Clashes between the Iraq-based opposition fighters and Iranian forces have been increasing over the past year.

Iran says the end of Mujahedeen operations from Iraqi territory is one of the conditions for normalizing relations. The two nations have yet to sign a formal peace treaty after their 1980-1988 war.

Iran is currently holding military exercises to mark the 20th anniversary of what it calls the "Sacred Defense," which it formally marked with a military parade on Thursday – TEHRAN (AFP)
