Under the guidance of H.E. Sheikh Dr. Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Civil Aviation, and based on the general policy of the integrated management system, Abu Dhabi Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and Abu Dhabi International Airport has been selected by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for an airport security audit to be held from 21st – 30th November 2005.

Abu Dhabi is the only airport in the Middle East that accepted the invitation for a full security audit by ICAO. One of the key objectives of ICAO is to promote global aviation security. The audits identify deficiencies in each state or country’s aviation security system, and provide recommendations for their mitigation or resolution. The audit is designed to enhance security standards by identifying resources required in airports security, technological developments and other security measures that can be adopted.

In the wake of terrorists acts committed in the United States on September 11, ICAO adopted resolution A33-1, entitled “Declaration on misuse of civil aircraft as weapons of destruction and other terrorist acts involving civil aviation” at the 33rd session ICAO assembly held on October 5, 2001. The conference endorsed a global strategy for strengthening aviation security worldwide, adopted a number of conclusions and recommendations and issued a public declaration. A central element of the strategy is an ICAO aviation security plan of action which includes regular, mandatory, systematic and harmonized audits to enable the evaluation of aviation security in place in all ICAO contracting countries.

The DCA is looking forward to welcome the ICAO delegation to the UAE this month. DCA has regarded the audit programme of ICAO as a key agenda item for 2005 as the implementation of the programme will enhance all security related standards at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
