ALBAWABA- A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Gaoxian County in Yibin City, Sichuan Province, southwest China, early Monday at 0:12 a.m. local time, according to seismic authorities.
The shallow quake, recorded at a depth of about 6 kilometres, caused minor structural damage and sent residents rushing out of homes, hotels, and restaurants in panic. Tremors were also felt in parts of Chengdu, the provincial capital.
Local officials said at least 13 people sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. No fatalities have been reported. Authorities also evacuated 196 residents from affected areas as a precaution while emergency teams assessed damage and continued rescue and inspection operations.
The China Earthquake Networks Center said the epicentre was located at 28.50°N latitude and 104.69°E longitude. Early reports indicated that roads, utilities, and key infrastructure remained largely operational, with no major disruptions to transport systems.
Emergency response teams have been deployed across the affected region, and authorities are monitoring for possible aftershocks as damage assessments continue.
