Germany’s foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Sunday he plans to visit the Gaza Strip in a rare trip by a Western leader to the Hamas-governed coastal enclave, AP reported.

Steinmeier said during meetings Sunday with Israeli and Palestinian officials that he is concerned about the situation on the ground in Gaza, which is still struggling to rebuild after a devastating war with Israel last summer.

He added that “concrete steps” and speedy reconstruction efforts are needed to improve daily life in the Gaza Strip.

Steinmeier said he would travel on Monday to Gaza.  He has no current plans to talk with Hamas, the Islamist party that governs the territory.
