ALBAWABA - A French top diplomat revealed that Paris is planning to scrub some sanctions that are imposed on Syria following the collapse of the former regime led by former president Bashar Assad, AFP reported on Wednesday.
Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, announced that some sanctions are expected to be 'lifted quickly'.
Jean-Noël Barrot stated to France Inter radio station: "There are sanctions targeting Bashar al-Assad and the executioners of his regime, there is clearly no intention to lift these sanctions. Then there are others which currently hinder access to humanitarian aid, which prevent the country's recovery and these could be lifted quickly."
In addition to France, Germany is also in talks with other countries in the European Union to ease sanctions imposed on Syria during the rule of ousted President Bashar Assad with the aim of assisting the Syrian people.
Reuters cited on Tuesday a source in the German Foreign Ministry: "We are seriously discussing ways to ease sanctions on the Syrian people in certain sectors."
In addition, The Financial Times reported citing informed sources, that German officials have offered two documents among EU officials outlining proposals on key sectors in which EU sanctions on Syria could be eased.
The discussion comes after the United States' partial exemption from sanctions on transactions with some government agencies in Syria for about 6 months on Monday to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid, overcome energy shortages, and allow personal transfers to Syria.
