Unidentified gunmen shot dead four people and wounded three in an apparent sectarian attack in an Iranian town on the border with Pakistan, reported The Associated Press, quoting media reports.
State television blamed the attack on "bandits," and gave no motive for the assault, which took place in the town of Saravan late on Thursday, according to the AP.
But Kayhan newspaper suggested the attack was related to mounting tension between Shiite and Sunni Muslim communities in southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The daily did not say what the victims' religious persuasion was, added the agency.
Large crowds marched in Saravan on Friday to condemn the attack and demand greater security measures before attending Friday prayers, it said.
