Former President Gustavo Noboa was placed under house arrest on charges he mishandled Ecuador's foreign debt negotiations during his three-year term, the country's interior minister said Monday.
Noboa returned to Ecuador in March after nearly two years of political exile following a ruling by Supreme Court Judge Guillermo Castro that cleared him — along with former President Abdala Bucaram and former Vice President Alberto Dahik — of various criminal charges.
But Castro was dismissed from the bench and the allegations were reinstated last month. Both Bucaram and Dahik returned to exile outside Ecuador.
Noboa is accused of mishandling Ecuador's foreign debt negotiations during his presidency and costing the country $9 billion. Noboa denies any wrongdoing and insists the charge is a political vendetta by his enemies.
