Three people were killed and three others were injured in the Iraqi town of Fallujah in clashes overnight between US troops and Iraqi fighters, according to eyewitnesses Wednesday.

According to reports, Iraqi fighters attacked a US patrol in Fallujah early Wednesday and an ensuing battle left three civilians dead and three injured, witnesses and a doctor said.

Television footage of the aftermath of the Fallujah battle, located some 32 miles west of the capital, showed two civilian vehicles burned, blood stains on the ground and bullet holes in walls, as well as two injured Iraqis being taken into a hospital. A couple of damaged houses were also shown as well as a burned truck and a bus damaged by shrapnel.

"US troops came under attack while they were patrolling in the main street," a local resident said.

For its part, the US military had no comment on the clashes.

Elsewhere, before dawn Wednesday, attackers fired a rocket that hit the Sheraton Hotel in Baghdad, where foreign contractors and journalists stay.

The rocket reportedly struck a sixth-floor ledge and the blast left the lobby strewn with glass, according to a security guard. US officials said there were no casualties. (Albawaba.com)
