An Egyptian daily on Friday slammed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. An editorial in Al-Ahram charged that Iraq's "bombastic statements" obstructed peace efforts and fueled Washington’s arguments to wage war, and that Saddam showed clear carelessness for the fate of his population.
"The statements made by the Iraqi regime are strange and mystifying," said the item signed by editor in chief Ibrahim Nafie. "At a time when main Arab states are deploying enormous efforts to find a peaceful settlement ... the Iraqi regime comes up with bombastic statements that obstruct them and give the camp of war in the United States new justification to wage war," he added.
"The leader of Baghdad and the pillars of his regime are barricaded in place that have been well prepared to face such events and to protect the life of the Iraqi president, but not his people," he said. (Albawaba.com)
