ALBAWABA - Chinese state media reported that Chinese leader Xi Jinping met on Monday with US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his delegation of lawmakers in the Chinses capital Beijing.
State news agency Xinhua said: "Chinese President Xi Jinping met with a US congressional delegation led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in Beijing on Monday,".
Schumer has also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday. Wang greeted Schumer and his delegation at Beijing's Diaoyutai State Guesthouse before going into a meeting.
In his opening remarks, China's foreign minister expressed optimism that the visit would "assist the United States in better understanding China".
He also expressed hope that the trip will assist the two sides in "managing existing differences more rationally, assisting the relationship between the two countries in returning to the track of healthy development".
In return, Senate Majority Leader thanked Wang for the warm welcome. "We very much appreciate the time you're taking to meet with us,".
"To demonstrate our willingness to undertake frank but productive communication, I am leading this bipartisan delegation," Schumer added.
US Senate Majority Leader called on China on Monday to support Israel in the aftermath of Hamas attacks, saying he was "disappointed" that Beijing shown "no sympathy" for the country over the weekend.
"The foreign ministry's statement... showed no sympathy or support for Israel during these tough, troubled times," Schumer stated.
