Batelco CEO, Marwan Juma’a sparked a controversial discussion on the first day of the Arab Advisor’s third annual Telecommunications Convergence Conference on Tuesday June 6, at the Four Seasons Hotel where he told participants that at the rate of advancements in technology in the world, even “voice revenue will soon be dead.”

Mr. Juma’a, a well known outspoken advocate of the advancement of IT technology in Jordan explained that revenues from voice will die as technologies will be bundled into a flat rate. The CEO also urged attendees to see the benefits of solving all obstacles in the face of advancement in order to solidify Jordan as a pioneer in the IT telecommunications sector.

“It is very important that we realize the importance of what we are all trying to do; that monopolies only serve to benefit the company and not the end user. We need to work our way into providing our customers with the ability to choose and therefore increase competition. Competition is imperative to the growth of the sector as a whole,” he said at the telecommunications conference.

Mr. Juma followed his energetic presentation with a live demonstration of video telephony, speaking live to an employee from Batelco Bahrain offices.

He preceded his comments with a brief history on Batelco Jordan with the inception of NETS in 1995, where he and two other friends pioneered e mail service in Jordan. He went on to name other pioneering efforts with the establishment of Batelco Jordan with the merge of NET and NETS.

Mr. Juma’a also emphasized the importance of combining the strengths of the three major players in the industry; the Government and the IT industry in order to educate the consumer on the endless services that can be provided through convergence.

Batelco Jordan, a sponsor of the event, directly relates the success of the company to telecommunications convergence in a bid to provide the consumer with simplicity and cost reductions. Batelco aims to bundle services in convenient packages.
