Barak Says Arafat Must Choose between Peace and Confrontation

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said Thursday that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Thursday must choose between a return to peace talks or continued confrontation with Israel. 

"Arafat and the Palestinian Authority must decide whether to return to the negotiating table to reach peace or whether they are going down the road of confrontation and violence," Barak said in a press conference here.  

"They will have to be ready to assume the consequences of their choice," he added. 

The prime minister also reaffirmed his view that Arafat has the means at his disposal to put a stop to the violence that has cost scores of lives and left hundreds of wounded over the past week, "giving the appropriate orders to his police and to the Tanzim, the armed faction of Arafat's party, Fatah -- TEL AVIV(AFP)
