The Israeli army has shown "maximum restraint" in dealing with clashes in the Palestinian territories, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak told Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Saturday, his spokesman said.
"Prime Minister Barak stated that Israel is exercising maximum restraint, but is determined to preserve public order and protect its citizens," in his phone call to Mubarak, spokesman David Baker told AFP.
He told Mubarak it was up to the Palestinian Authority "to restrain and control the disturbances," Baker said.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who visited Cairo Saturday, has accused the Israelis of shooting to kill, by aiming at the heads of Palestinians.
From Cairo, Egypt's state-run Middle East News Agency confirmed that Mubarak had received a phone call from Barak, during which they studied the latest developments in the peace process.
It said Mubarak told Barak he deplored "the bloody events which took place between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers and their negative consequences for the peace process," MENA said - JERUSALEM (AFP)
