Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak telephoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak late Tuesday to discuss the wave of violence that has rocked the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the Egyptian news agency MENA reported.

They talked about the need to contain the situation, which has caused more than 60 deaths, most of them Palestinians, since Friday, the agency said.

Barak is expected to meet Mubarak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Thursday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, one day after Barak and Arafat talk with US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in Paris.

Diplomatic sources in Washington said Albright would also go to Sharm el-Sheikh.

Mubarak Tuesday invited Arafat and Barak to meet him but did not name a day. Barak's office said it would be Thursday.

The violence broke out after Israeli right-wing opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited the al-Aqsa mosque compound, which houses Islam's third holiest site, on Temple Mount in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem, which is also sacred to Jews and the subject of a bitter dispute over sovereignty.
